WELLINGTON COUNTY – A new report going before the Wellington County Roads Committee Tuesday morning has staff recommending against adding 10 new automated speed enforcement (ASE) camera locations in Wellington North, Mapleton, Erin, and Centre Wellington at this time.
The decision, according to the report, is based on challenges related to hydro infrastructure and the need for more speed data at certain locations.
Those additional locations include:

Staff say from the table, there are many locations that require hydro infrastructure to be installed to proceed with ASE camera implementation.
“This additional infrastructure can include: installation of a meter base, connection of a new service, and in some locations, pole upgrades. A site assessment report from Global Traffic Group noted that providing power to locations where a service is needed would be a challenge with the need to procure an electrical contractor to provide a detailed assessment, establish a power and mounting plan, and get the required approvals,” the report said.
For now, staff believe that the initial seven locations will provide the County with sufficient traffic safety data and experience with ASE during the County’s one-year trial programme.
“As well, gaining possibly only four months’ data from the additional sites may not provide significant speed and driver behaviour trend data to assist in the evaluation of the ASE trial programme,” staff said.
The existing five ASE camera locations will continue to operate, and staff believe they will provide sufficient traffic safety data for the one-year trial program.
In the report, staff say vehicle speeds have already decreased by 17% and compliance with speed limits has increased by 66%.
A report on the safety effectiveness of ASE devices is due in June 2025, and the two remaining trial locations are expected to go live in May after being delayed due to Hydro One-related issues.
The committee will consider the recommendation at Tuesday’s meeting.
