SALEM – A large scale evacuation of Salem was avoided Thursday following a propane truck fire.
Just before 5pm, Centre Wellington Fire Rescue responded to the intersection of Wellington Road 7 and Wellington Road 18 for the report of a propane truck on fire.
Deputy Fire Chief Jonathan Karn says when crews arrived on scene the driver of the vehicle had already attempted to extinguish the fire prior to their arrival.
He says fire crews did have to cool the vehicle down and put out any remaining fire.
Karn says the fire stayed within the back tires and did not spread to the propane tank itself, but had the propane truck been completely on fire he says it would have resulted in a large scale evacuation of Salem.
While the cause has not been officially determined, Karn says it was most likely a mechanical issue.
No injuries were reported.
The intersection of Wellington Road 7 and Wellington Road 18 was closed but has since re-opened.
