NEWS RELEASE WELLINGTON COUNTY OPP
(COUNTY OF WELLINGTON, ON) – Beginning October, 2021, Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) takes aim at improving public safety and creating efficiencies for drivers involved in property-damage collisions with the introduction of a local Collision Reporting Centre (C.R.C.). The objective is to provide a convenient, quick and safe way to report collisions when they don’t involve serious injuries or property damage beyond involved vehicles.
As required by Ontario law, drivers involved in a collision must exchange information including the driver identification, vehicle information and insurance details. If the combined damage of the collision is estimated to be over $2,000, you are required to report it to the police. You must also report any collision that results in injuries or causes property damage beyond the vehicles.
While common in many cities, some may not know how the C.R.C. process works. So we’ve brought together some information that may help.
Wellington OPP are asking drivers that want a quick, safe and convenient way to report a simple collision to attend with the vehicle to the Centre Wellington operations centre at 371 Charles Allen Way, Fergus. The C.R.C. is open Monday to Wednesday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and Thursday and Friday between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
If the collision involves any of the following, call 1-888-310-1122, or 911 in the case of emergency, and police will attend:
- Any collision causing serious injury or death
- Any collision that causes damage to public or private property beyond the vehicles involved
- Any collision where a vehicle is blocking traffic and cannot be removed from the roadway
- Any collision where a driver fails to remain at the scene prior to exchanging information or there is a conflict between drivers
- Any collision that is suspected to involve a criminal act (i.e. impaired driving, stolen vehicle, drugs)
- Any collision that involves a cyclist or pedestrian
- Any collision involving a municipal, provincial or federal vehicle
- Any collision involving a vehicle transporting dangerous goods or livestock or a commercial motor vehicle with a gross weight above 11,000kg
- Any collision where any person involved wishes that an officer attend in person
If you are in a C.R.C. reportable collision we ask that you remove your vehicle, if drivable, to a safe location. This reduces the risk of possible secondary collisions or injuries as well as congestion. Once safe, assess the situation, gather all prudent information about the collision and attend the C.R.C. with the vehicle.
Individuals will be required to provide collision details such as road names, speed limits, directions of travel, road and weather conditions as well as other driver’s information. By calling the OPP at 1-888-310-1122, drivers will be provided with detailed information on what they need to do and where they can go to report a collision if they are unsure.
The Wellington County OPP is one of 21 OPP C.R.C.’s throughout the province.
