MEDIA RELEASE ELORA CENTRE FOR THE ARTS
Have you ever wondered how a hand made copper cup is created? This exhibition by Sandra Dunn titled “The In Between” demonstrates how it all happens behind the scenes, and what’s involved and required along the way. This engaging exhibition celebrates the “trail of tools” that are designed and handmade in order to bring the ideas to life. It celebrates the ideas phase, the importance of sketches and drawings and the magic that happens in the gap between the invisible phase of ideas and the realty of a finished forged piece.
Sandra Dunn is an artist, designer and blacksmith. Involved with blacksmithing for 29 years, seven years ago she founded Two Smiths, a design and prototyping studio that develops and builds sculptures, functional objects and architectural features in forged steel, hammered copper and bronze for both private and public spaces. Recently her work is focused on designing and making larger scale public art in forged steel and copper.
“I want to challenge you, and challenge myself, to stop and appreciate the magic of the “in between” of blacksmithing (and of life!) and come to realize that perhaps, in that appreciation for how things came to be, we will be encouraged to see things differently”.
“This is an exhibition where even the handcrafted tools are presented as art”, says Annette Hansen, curator of the exhibition. “You will be fascinated by the detailed path that one piece requires” she says.
“The In Between’ will run from March 10 to April 17, 2022 in the main gallery at the Elora Centre for the Arts.
