Centre Wellington Township is returning to normal street traffic and parking after two summers of pedestrian-only weekends in Downtown Elora.
At yesterday’s committee of the whole meeting, a report was presented to Centre Wellington council that outlined a proposed parking strategy and how to move forward with street closures.
Dan Wilson, Chief Administrative Officer, said a demand for parking in 2022 is expected following the upcoming loss of a 61 space parking lot on the corner of Metcalfe Street and Carlton Place, which is owned by Pearle Hospitality.
Council heard the reopening the area to vehicle traffic would provide approximately 70 parking spaces and approved staff’s recommendation that streets only be closed for special events.
The approved recommendation also includes directing staff to find solutions for the property owners that do not have access to their driveways during future street closures.
Due to the strain COVID-19 initially had on local businesses, Metcalfe and West Mill streets in Downtown Elora became pedestrian-only roadways on Saturdays and Sundays.
Township officials hoped this would boost local businesses and create extra physical space due to COVID public health measures.
