A Guelph high school was in lockdown for more than an hour Tuesday afternoon following reports of someone possibly carrying a firearm.
Guelph Police were called to Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute on Paisley Street around 1:50 p.m. after a caller reported seeing several male youths walking towards the school and believed one had a firearm.
Several officers including members of the Tactical Response Unit responded to the school, which was placed into lockdown at 2:10 p.m.
The school was searched and police located a male youth and also recovered a black revolver-style cap gun.
The lockdown was lifted at 3:28pm and students were allowed to leave their classrooms.
Police say the youth expressed extreme remorse and was educated about the dangers of being in possession of what could be mistaken for a real firearm.
Because no threats were made and the cap gun was not used in an aggressive way, Guelph Police say officers used discretion and referred the youth to the John Howard Society instead of laying charges.
