A new school to be located in Fergus will be part of a Rapid Build pilot project announced by the provincial government.
$8.5 million in funding for the new school to be built in Phase One of the Storybrook subdivision, was approved earlier this year.
Yesterday, the government announced five schools would be part of the pilot project including the Upper Grand District School Board’s new elementary school.
According to the province, the pilot project will leverage Infrastructure Ontario’s rapid procurement and rapid delivery expertise, and look at the potential to use modular construction methods.
These methods generally involve producing standardized components of a structure in an off-site factory, then assembling them on-site.
A news release issued yesterday states these alternative builds will identify opportunities for the government to examine future projects that could use the same technologies, and allow students to take advantage of new and updated schools sooner.
A past report to the board noted plans for roughly 1,500 housing units in northwest Fergus and 4,000 units in Centre Wellington over the next 10 years.
The report stated that existing schools in the area would not have the capacity to accommodate the growth.
The new school is expected to have 308 students.
