The Upper Grand District School Board is looking forward to being part of a pilot project announced by the provincial government.
Last week, The Grand at 101 reported that a new school to be located in Fergus will be part of a Rapid Build pilot project.
$8.5 million in funding for the new school to be built in Phase One of the Storybrook subdivision, was approved earlier this year.
Communications Manager with the board, Heather Loney, says they are excited to be one of five boards chosen to be part of this initiative.
A news release issued last week by the government states these alternative builds will identify opportunities for the government to examine future projects that could use these technologies, and allow students to take advantage of new and updated schools sooner.
Loney says they are awaiting details but says the government states they will be looking at some innovative construction methods.
These methods generally involve producing standardized components of a structure in an off-site factory, then assembling them on-site.
A past report to the school board noted plans for roughly 1,500 housing units in northwest Fergus, and 4,000 units in Centre Wellington over the next 10 years.
The report stated that existing schools in the area would not have the capacity to accommodate the growth.
The new school is expected to have 308 students.
