Your yellow garbage bags are about to become a little more environmentally friendly.
Wellington County’s user-pay bags will be made with 10 per cent recycled material.
According to a report that will be presented at tomorrow’s Solid Waste Services Committee, the idea of a more earth friendly bag was first introduced in January of this year, and staff were directed to study the feasibility of a paper garbage bag.
However, in March, staff recommended against pursuing the option further.
The manufacturer assured staff that some recycled content could be included without compromising the quality or performance of the garbage bags.
With that assurance staff have moved forward with the plan and ordered a supply that will contain a 10 per cent blend of recycled content.
The percentage of recycled content will gradually be increased to 20 per cent, if the bags meet expectations and standards.
That percentage is the highest recommended by the manufacturer for County needs.
