GUELPH – The Guelph Humane Society is set to hold an in-person adoption event this Friday and Saturday, one of only a few offered in-person since the beginning of the pandemic.
Lisa Veit, Guelph Humane Society’s executive director says they find August is always a slow adoption month for GHS, given that many people vacation over the summer and it may not be a good time to welcome a new family member. She says they really havent seen that trend over the last two years.
The Humane Society currently has 180 animals in its care many of which are ready for adoption including dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs.
Veit says there is no direct evidence to suggest a jump in intake is due to a ‘puppy pandemic,’ instead, the rising cost of living caused by inflation and housing instability have been cited as factors impacting increases in the number of animals entering shelters.
She says they have about 60 animals currently available for adoption.
GHS adoptions have been conducted virtually since March of 2020. While adoptions will resume to virtual after this event, they hope to return to regular in-person appointments later this fall.
The in-person Study Buddy Adoption Event will be held on Friday, September 16 from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 17 from 10:00 a.m. until noon. GHS encourages those interested in attending to pre-book an appointment on the event website to reduce wait times, drop-ins are also welcome.
Appointments can be booked at “Study Buddy” Adoption Event – September 16 & 17, 2022 Tickets, Fri, 16 Sep 2022 at 10:00 AM | Eventbrite.
