BELWOOD – In light of the recent fire in Belwood, Canada Post says they will provide information about how local residents can get their mail.
In a statement Canada Post says “As a result of the fire that took place in the building where the Belwood Post Office was located, our operations team is quickly adjusting our postal operations and working on contingency plans to serve the residents of Belwood.”
Canada Post says they continue to assess the damages, but they have been able to recover some mail items. As a result, officials say some customers have started to receive their recovered mail with a letter of explanation.
“Regular mail delivery will resume as soon as possible next week. For residents who were picking up their mail at the retail counter of the post office, we are looking at temporary solutions to continue to deliver their mail. We will inform them as to where they will be able to pick up their mail on a temporary basis.”
In the meantime, Canada Post says customers can access postal services and pick up carded items at the Fergus Main Post Office located at 299 St Andrews Street West.
“They must provide a valid government-issued photo identification when collecting their mail. We take these matters and the security of the mail very seriously. This unfortunate situation is out of our control and we thank our customers for their understanding.”
Customers who are missing a mail item or parcel are asked to contact the sender and begin their claim for a refund or have the parcel sent to them again. Customers can also contact Canada Post’s Customer Service team online at canadapost.ca/support or by telephone at 1-866-607-6301 (TTY: 1-800-267-2797) for further information.
Earlier this week, a fire tore through the Belwood post office, forcing Canada Post services to be halted.
Centre Wellington Fire and Rescue, along with EMS, and OPP were called to the scene on George Street at around 12:20am Tuesday morning. Centre Wellington Deputy Fire Chief Jonathan Karn said the building contained several residential units and a Canada Post location, however no one was living at the location as the units were undergoing renovations.
Investigation is being conducted by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office, but no cause has been determined.
