FERGUS – The former Groves Memorial Community Hospital will be demolished as provincial funding nears its end.
The old site located at 235 Union Street in Fergus closed its doors in August of 2020 as the new hospital opened at 131 Frederick Campbell Street in Fergus.
Over the past couple of years the building has been used for a variety of purposes including a COVID-19 Assessment and Vaccination Clinic, short- term rental spaces and a training space for the OPP.
Angela Stanley President and CEO of Groves Memorial Community Hospital says the provincial funding that pays to operate the site expires on March 31.
She says they cannot afford to continue to pay to operate the building and it would be too expensive to repurpose, therefore the building will be demolished.
Stanley says the building will need to come down and work is underway to organize the demolition.
The building will be secured until decommissioning work begins this spring.
Following the demolition, plans will need to be made regarding the use of the property and according to Stanley, the next logical step would be the sale of the property and reinvesting the proceeds back into health care services and programs.
