The proposal for two separate four-storey apartment buildings, one in Fergus and one in Elora, was not received overly well by delegates at Wednesday night’s public meeting.
The developers are seeking a bylaw amendment that would allow each of the buildings to be four storeys in height.
Right now, the current bylaw only allows for three storey construction.
The majority of those in attendance, residents and even some councillors, questioned the idea, saying it would be detrimental to the small town feel and could even kill the magic of the smaller towns.
County of Wellington Ward 5 Councillor Mary Lloyd, told The Grand at 101, the building would distract from small businesses and other very important properties.
Richard Wright, Trustee of the neighbouring Melville United Church in Fergus, worries about church-goers with the added population occupying the same parking lot as the church.
He says he is also worried about the possible insurance impacts and the removal of snow from the lot in the winter.
The proposed developments would see a 36-unit building on St. Andrew Street West in Fergus and a smaller building on Geddes Street in Elora.
Both buildings would have ground floor commercial space.
