CENTRE WELLINGTON – The Township of Centre Wellington could revisit opting into Ontario’s cannabis retail program after a notice of motion was made at Monday nights Council meeting.
The notice of motion was made by Ward 5 Councillor Bronwynne Wilton, directing staff to prepare a report for Council’s consideration.
At a February committee of the whole meeting two delegates including John Mifsud a cannabis advocate and Diane Ballantyne Ward 6 Wellington County Councillor asked council to revisit cannabis retail legislation in Centre Wellington.
Both presented that legalizing retail cannabis stores would provide a boost to the local economy by creating employment opportunities while providing the municipality tax revenue through the Ontario Excise Tax Transfer Framework.
Ballantyne and Mifsud said that an informal poll of 542 people showed over 82% supported legal cannabis in Centre Wellington.
Since cannabis was made legal in Canada, Centre Wellington and Mapleton are the only two municipalities in Wellington County that have not opted in with retail cannabis.
Wilton’s motion will be decided at a future council meeting on whether to go ahead with the request.
