Concerns for canines echoed through a Mapleton Township council meeting earlier this week, as one local resident raised issues regarding local puppy mills once again.
Co-Founder and President of Stop the Mills, Donna Power, thinks the number of dogs permitted in these mills is too high. She’d like to see it lowered from the current Mapleton maximum of 25 to what she considers a healthier range of 12-15 dogs.
Power told The Grand at 101 the dogs are there to serve a sole purpose.
She claims that the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association guidelines are the bible of go-to best practices, but that municipality by-laws don’t come close to that code of practice.
Power also says under-the-table payment to breeders needs to be addressed and she is hoping for taxation of their fees, heftier fines for malpractice and stricter micro-chipping laws.
She explains those running the mills aren’t in it for the sake of the dogs.
Power also wants to see random, consistent inspections of suspected puppy mill operations.
