WELLINGTON NORTH – A recently released proposed Provincial Planning Statement (PPS) regarding agriculture was not received well by Wellington North council Tuesday night. The statement proposes merging the 2020 PPS with the “A Place to Grow” Growth plan in order to assist the province in creating more homes.
The 1.5 billion home goal would be attained by creating residential lots on agricultural land, to the tune of a potential 12,000 lots on farmland in Wellington County, per a presentation at council.
Wellington North Mayor Andy Lennox wants to create a detailed list of comments before meeting with MPPs ahead of the June 5th commenting deadline.
He stated he is worried for the long-term effects on those within the county and even his own family, as his son has taken an interest in farming.
He is concerned about the lack of attention paid to the longevity of farms being built on.
Lennox reiterated the urgency of the issue and said “the sooner the better” to get collective thoughts together ahead of the deadline.
