WELLINGTON COUNTY – The largest farm organization in the County of Wellington is extremely concerned about the recently proposed changes to the Provincial Policy Statement that details a plan to build residential lots on agricultural land.
At Thursdays county council meeting, Janet Harrop, President of the Wellington Federation of Agriculture said she was shocked by the statement that plans to add up to three residential lots per farm.
She says the damage would span beyond just livestock farms and the lack of availability of land.
Harrop went on to say that the province has been supportive of agriculture and protecting lands that are fertile and akin to growing food in recent years.
Warden Andy Lennox said “we need to grow food here,” building off Harrop’s assessment of Wellington County, in which she stated farmlands should not grow homes, they should grow food.
Lennox said that based on a discussion with local MPPs Thursday morning, he believes the deadline for comments may be extended past the original June 5th deadline.
While the county works to get collective comments together, several ideas were tabled including the possibility of a video submission.
