KITCHENER – The Alzheimer Society of Waterloo Wellington held its annual IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s on May 27th, raising $116,262 for dementia-based programs, services, and support.
The annual event is the Alzheimer’s Society’s signature fundraiser, bringing in much-needed funds to keep programs and services for people living with dementia free and accessible to all.
According to a press release, the Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington only receives 40% of its budget from the government, with the remainder raised through donations and fundraising. Advocates say more funding is needed.
“This is unsustainable,” explains Michelle Martin, Executive Director of the Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington, “the number of people living with dementia is expected to rise drastically”.
By 2030, more than one million Canadians will be living with dementia. As healthcare costs continue to rise, caring for a person living with dementia will be unaffordable to many, the press release stated.
The Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington continues to rely on donors to fund the majority of their budget. One way for community members to support is through their Monthly Donor Program.
Becoming a monthly donor helps fund programs and services directly. All money raised stays in the local community, and every donation over $20 is eligible for a tax receipt
