WELLINGTON NORTH – Following up on a lengthy discussion regarding livestock guardian dogs in an early July council meeting, a report presented to council Monday sparked several more concerns.
Council voted in favour to bringing the limit on dogs within Wellington North down from ten to five, with an exemption for the heavily discussed livestock guardian dogs.
The livestock guardian dogs continued to lead to disagreement between councillors. Lisa Hern was in support of the idea of reducing the dog limit, though she was also in favour of taking away the fee for registering a livestock guardian dog.
Councillor Penny Renken pointed out these dogs save farmers money over time.
Council did not move Hern’s amendment looking to discard the fee.
Mayor Andy Lennox said this is a good starting point, and councillor Steve McCabe stated he’d be comfortable moving forward on a case-by-case basis when it comes to exemptions.
Councillor Sherry Burke noted that accepting each situation as unique is no different than any other minor variance.
