Global Affairs Canada released a statement today regarding an information operation targeting Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong.
Per the statement, in June of this year, Global Affairs Canada’s Rapid Response Mechanism detected the information operation that took place on the social media platform WeChat back in May.
Between May 4th and 13th, a coordinated network of WeChat’s News accounts featured, shared and amplified a large volume of false narratives about Chong’s identity, including claims about his background and family heritage.
The statement also claims while China’s role in the operation is highly probable, there is no “unequivocal proof” at this time that China ordered and directed the operation.
The Government of Canada stated it takes attempts like these to undermine their institutions very seriously, and will continue to take action to protect Canada’s democracy.
