WELLINGTON NORTH – Out of Wellington County’s seven municipalities, Wellington North has the highest poverty rate according to a new Statistics Canada dashboard measuring some quality of life indicators.
The numbers showed Wellington North has the highest rate of poverty at 7.3 per cent. The lowest county digit was Puslinch at 2.8 per cent, with Centre Wellington at 3.4.
26.3 per cent of residents live in what is not considered acceptable housing in Wellington North.
Mayor of Wellington North Andy Lennox says while work is being done to address the lack of housing for youth in the community, more assistance is needed.
Lennox went on to say the township will need the federal and provincial government’s assistance as well as help from the public sector and private industry to stem the tide of this issue.
The community growth plan, Lennox says, has been helpful in turning things around since it was created in 2018.
Lennox added the township is looking at refreshing the community growth plan shortly.
