WELLINGTON COUNTY – The presence of blue-green algae has been confirmed at Woolwich and Belwood Lake reservoirs.
The Grand River Conservation Area has confirmed the presence of the dangerous algae and has posted signage at both locations notifying visitors of the conditions.
According to a press release, the GRCA says hot summer days can create the perfect conditions for algae to grow and bloom in large bodies of water.
The GRCA says recreational visitors and cottagers should avoid contact with the algae and keep children and pets away. They should also avoid using the water for any purpose and they are also warned not to eat any fish from the lake.
While boating is allowed where permitted, touching the algae should be avoided.
Some varieties of blue-green algae can produce toxins that are harmful to both people and pets.
