GUELPH/ERAMOSA- The price to license a dog in Guelph/Eramosa could be going up.
The Township of Guelph/Eramosa recently entered into an 18-month animal control service contract with the Guelph Humane Society shared with Centre Wellington.
According to a staff report presented at Wednesday’s committee of the whole, in 2024, the total costs associated with the contract for the township will be just over $85,000.
The report says 79% of the services are to be related to some form of canine control, resulting in approximately $67,000.
In 2022, the Township sold 768 dog tag licenses for a total of almost $27,000.
The report says should the number of licenses sold remain consistent in 2024, the township will be looking at a revenue shortfall of $40,000.
Staff are recommending increasing dog tag licensing fees and introducing a late fee penalty of $5 to licenses that are not renewed within 60 days to help off-set the shortfall.
As a result a spayed or neutered dog would cost $32 to license, and a fertile dog would cost $37.
The staff recommendation will now go before a later council meeting for possible ratification.
