CENTRE WELLINGTON – Centre Wellington councillors will be getting a slight pay increase but neglected to opt into retirement savings plan contributions following their 2023 market review.
The move followed a lengthy discussion in Centre Wellington chambers last night. Councillors will make nearly $29,000 annually, up from $23,716 starting on January 1st, 2024.
The mayor’s salary, meanwhile, will rise to $53,397 from $47,286.
Rashid Hasan, township Chief Human Resources Officer, stated several factors were considered in this review, including trends in outside communities.
Hasan says on the opt-out front, it was a gesture from council.
Mayor Shawn Watters reiterated this is a hardworking council, stating “these are not crazy numbers.”
Council also discussed the option of a pension plan known as Ontario Municipal Employees’ Retirement System, but chose against it because it would lock future councils into the same pension strategy.
