WELLINGTON COUNTY – In a staff survey throughout Wellington County centre-based child programs, many programs reported they have operated at a reduced rate due to staffing shortages.
The survey had a response rate of 65 per cent.
25 per cent of the 58 surveyed reported relying on a supervisor to cover staff absences unexpectedly to meet ratio requirements 4-6 times per month.
Many programs reported that due to staffing shortages, they have operated at a reduced capacity.
This meant they were not able to provide care for the maximum number of children that the program can support, according to their license from the Ministry of Education.
57 per cent made at least one operational change to their program in the last 12 months, including 36 per cent pausing the enrolment of children.
A report presented to the Wellington County social services committee this week says these changes negatively affect the quality and stability of childcare programs.
Several survey respondents called for improved recruitment and retention strategies, including competitive wages and benefits.
The report was received for information.
