ROCKWOOD – A popular winter activity could soon be removed from a park in Rockwood.
Tobogganing has the potential to be banned at the hill in John Jolliffe Park following a discussion at Guelph/Eramosa council earlier this week.
The recommendation before council stated an inspection found the hill’s steep slope and short run-out present safety risks. Councillor Corey Woods was steadfast against the idea, vouching for the importance of tobogganing within the township.
Councillors discussed the concerns that exist safety-wise and pondered mitigation to decrease the amount of worry surrounding the hill, such as hay bales to offset the short run-out.
Mayor Chris White said he can understand the suggestion, but there is more to consider.
White reiterated the importance of tobogganing, backing up Woods, and added the parks and recreation master plan shows the township is displaying initiative.
Staff decided to give the item more consideration before deciding, with Rockmosa Park suggested as a possible alternative location.
