Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong has been granted “full standing” for a public inquiry into foreign interference.
This means Chong will have the right to ask questions of witnesses.
The decision by Commissioner Marie-Josée Hogue states that “Mr. Chong has filed this application for standing in both the factual and policy aspects of the inquiry.”
It goes on to state he seeks Party status, which would entitle him to all recognized participation rights.
In a story by the Globe and Mail in the springtime, information surfaced regarding the Chinese government’s foreign interference in Canada that exposed a plot to have Chong’s foreign relatives investigated.
Chong has also been targeted by a smear campaign. This campaign on social media, the Globe and Mail says, is likely to be China’s doing as well.
The hearings will begin in January. A final report is expected by the end of the coming year.
