CENTRE WELLINGTON – Originally planned to be a six-storey mixed-use dwelling, a now-five-storey building is moving ahead in Fergus.
Located at the corner of St. David Street North and Strathallan Drive, council approved the application this week.
Managing Director of Planning and Development Brett Salmon presented to council at the meeting, who shared several notes.
Councillor Bronwynne Wilton’s concerns were related to the nearby gas bar, situated on an adjacent lot.
Salmon noted since the development and the gas bar are on separate lots, there is no zoning issue present.
Wilton also mentioned she is glad to see and is fully supportive of intensification.
Councillor Lisa McDonald echoed Wilton’s concerns and added in Fergus and Elora, the pickings are slim as to where to intensify.
Mayor Shawn Watters stated the previous council has set a new standard for development he’s glad to see staff utilizing.
Watters added it will be important to keep this in mind when trying to protect ag land.
Councillor Jennifer Adams inquired about MTO guidelines, and Salmon noted this property is outside of MTO jurisdiction, while councillor Barb Evoy agreed with McDonald, going on to say offering variety in housing is key.
