WELLINGTON COUNTY – Alzheimer’s awareness month takes place throughout January.
This year, Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington is keying in on caregiver support as a focus for the month.
On average, Michelle Martin, the society’s executive director, says there are 1.5 caregivers per person dealing with dementia.
She stated these caregivers’ significance cannot be overstated, and studies back that up.
She added there are a significant number of these caregivers within the community.
Martin went on to say the society is always focused on supporting caregivers, but during awareness month, the key is to up education and communication surrounding their importance.
She added this year is about reducing hesitancy and opening the door to conversation for caregivers.
A variety of supports are available at the society including no charge virtual and in person education sessions.
Alzheimer Society Waterloo Wellington holds their annual walk for Alzheimer’s in May of this year.
Martin says it is a crucial event to the society’s operation.
