WELLINGTON COUNTY – The price for user pay garbage bags in Wellington County could be going up this summer.
According to a new report going before the county’s Solid Waste Services Committee tomorrow afternoon, staff are recommending a fee increase of $.50 for all bagged waste managed by the County.
The proposed increase would apply to large and small User Pay garbage bags, as well as to the bag fee for waste disposed at the County’s six waste facilities.
If approved, residents would see the price of a large user pay bag go up from $2.00 to $2.50, a small user pay bag would go up from $1.50 to $2.00, and the bag fee at a county waste facility would go up from $2.00 to $2.50.
“A higher bagged waste fee that is more accurately aligned with the cost-of-living increases helps to strengthen the economic incentive to reduce and divert waste. In the context of scarce landfill capacity in Ontario, it is more important than ever to promote and encourage waste reduction and diversion through a multitude of different means,” the report said.
The fee increase will make an additional $300,000 for the County in 2024 and 2025.
Staff say the proposed fee increase would come into effect in July to allow retailers who sell User Pay garbage bags to adjust prices and provides the opportunity for staff to communicate this change to residents in a timely manner.
The report will be presented and recommended for approval at the 1pm meeting.
