CENTRE WELLINGTON – With more snow in the forecast, Centre Wellington Fire and Rescue is asking residents to take a few minutes for some winter maintenance on their property.
Fire prevention Officer Christopher Paluch says even though first responders know where hydrants are located when attending a call, having the area cleared of snow can save valuable time.
He says after the snow has fallen its also a good idea to go outside your house, and take a look around those vents for your furnace, clothes dryer, and make sure they are free and clear.
Paluch says by doing so it will help prevent carbon monoxide emergencies in the home.
Blocked vents can cause equipment failure and introduce carbon monoxide into your home. After heavy snow falls, be sure to shovel the snow away from vents!#COSafety #FirePrevention pic.twitter.com/M46BeYUXS5

He also reminds residents who have wood burning fireplaces in their homes to make sure they are inspected and cleaned annually by a professional company.
“If you are going to have a fire in your fireplace, have it burning nice and hot.”
Paluch says that way the fire burns a lot more cleanly and its not going to leave that residue in the chimney that can lead to a chimney fire.
