CENTRE WELLINGTON – The Township of Centre Wellington is adopting a new Community Heritage Grant Program following a council meeting Monday.
Mariana Iglesias, township manager of planning services was before staff at the meeting, and explained that of over 1,000 listed properties, only 115 properties in Centre Wellington are designated heritage properties.
Iglesias says some of these properties may be encouraged to come forward for designation under the new program.
Iglesias explained the township does not currently have a heritage specific financial incentive program right now, but heritage is a key part of the community improvement plan.
When councillor Barb Evoy questioned how many possible heritage properties remain undesignated in the township, Iglesias informed staff the future of many properties could be uncertain if not for this type of a program.
The program would be funded up to 50 per cent or $10,000, helping heritage property owners out with one project a year.
A call for applications would typically begin at the start of the year, though the township is looking at March for this year to allot proper time.
