MAPLETON – Mapleton is full of licensed kennels and also unlicensed ones, according to one councillor who voiced concern in a public meeting on Tuesday.
Councillor Michael Martin was hesitant to welcome an amendment for a breeding kennel and the recognition of an existing bed and breakfast use on subject lands in the township.
Mayor Gregg Davidson chimed in, saying the family is working to come into compliance, but Martin said these types of applications don’t sit well with him.
The amendment was to permit a breeding kennel and recognize an existing bed and breakfast (Airbnb) use on the subject lands in a separate structure from the main residence pictured below:

It was tabled to staff that short-term accommodations have been brought up in other municipalities, like Centre Wellington, but with both the BnB and the kennel at play for what Martin considered a long-overdue application, there were “lots of red flags.”
Martin did recognize the number of properly regulated kennels locally, but still voiced his hesitancy to accept this proposal.
Martin added he hopes to see more clarity surrounding the issue.
It’s not the first time puppies have been a topic of discussion in the municipality.
The proposal was one of several applications tabled in the meeting. All were received for information pending further discussions.
