MINTO – Residents were calling for the allowance of gun hunting on Sundays in Minto at a meeting this week.
Between a letter of support from resident Jill Machan and the delegation of Mark Ryckman, policy manager at the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, the group voiced their support.
Ryckman listed several reasons including the disparity between Wellington North and Minto when it comes to hunting, despite a short distance between them.
Gun hunting is currently prohibited on Sundays in the township but permitted every other day of the week.
Ryckman stated there’s less of a risk for injury in hunting than many people assume.
Machan, a Minto resident and proponent of gun hunting in the township, said in a letter due to work obligations and the lack of hunting on Sundays, her sons and nephew are only able to hunt on Saturdays.
Given the benefits Ryckman presented, including economic and wildlife advantages, he said continuing to prohibit gun hunting on Sunday is an “untenable” position.
Council will prepare a staff report on the matter to be presented at a later date.
