WELLINGTON COUNTY – Effective July 1, the County of Wellington’s Solid Waste Services Division will implement a fee increase for user pay garbage bags.
In a news release, the County says the increase was deemed necessary to ensure the continued provision of high-quality waste management services to residents across the County.
The increase includes:
- Large User Bag: from $2.00 to $2.50 each
- Small User Bags: from $1.50 to $2.00 each
- Bag Fee at Waste Facility Sites: from $2.00 to $2.50 (no charge if garbage is in yellow user pay bags)
“Costs in most sectors, including manufacturing, have increased significantly since the last fee increase in 2016,” said Warden Andy Lennox in a news release. “The County is committed to maintaining best waste management practices and ensuring efficient operations while preserving environmental integrity.”
The County says user pay systems are considered a best practice for waste management as there is more incentive to reduce waste and divert materials away from landfill into organics and recycling streams.
“Wellington County keeps fees lower than other municipalities which use a similar user pay system, funding waste disposal through a combination of taxation and individual fees,” commented Councillor Stephen O’Neill, Solid Waste Services Committee Chair. “This approach ensures fairness and accountability, as residents pay for the waste they generate. By reducing waste at home, individuals can effectively manage their disposal costs, promoting responsible environmental stewardship within our community.”
