The Elora Rocks have a new agreement with the Township of Centre Wellington to pay back a $25 thousand dollar, interest free loan.
The hockey club’s payments have been reduced to $25 hundred dollars a year and will be due at the end of the season, with the exception of the payment that was due last month. That payment is now being deferred to December.
Not everyone on Council agreed with the plan. Councillor Bronwynne Wilton was concerned deferring the first payment would set a precedent and believes the club should be able to come up with the money.
“I think $2500 for this group…should be doable. That’s a bottle drive,” Wilton said. “I’m sorry but every other community organization has to fundraise for their fees and ice time.”
Mayor Shawn Watters urged his fellow councillors to support the agreement.
“My feeling is staff went out in good faith and worked and chatted. They brought forward this [agreement] and I think this is a good conclusion,” said Watters. “And we can caught up sometimes in the minutiae of these things. But in my mind, it’s always looking at the big picture.”
The Rocks now have 10 years to repay the loan.
