GUELPH – The County of Wellington is going to be moving residents currently in temporary housing at the former Holiday Inn Express in Guelph to Norfolk Manor.
The former assisted living facility has the capacity for 68 residents.
The County originally planned to phase out the 65 beds at the Holiday Inn. Despite 112 new transitional and supportive housing spaces opening up in the area, but an increase in the homeless population means those spaces are still needed.
“Our data indicates that there has been a 33 per cent increase in the number of individuals experiencing chronic homelessness in the first quarter of 2024,” said Mark Poste, Director of Housing Services in a media release. “The Norfolk property will help stabilize 68 spaces for temporary accommodation in a much more affordable arrangement.”
In a release, the County says Norfolk Manor is close to the downtown core and within walking distance of social, health, employment and support services.
There will be staff on site 24/7 provided by Stepping Stone.
Residents will be moving into Norfolk Manor next week.
