FERGUS – The Township of Centre Wellington just opened its first disc golf course.
The nine hole course officially opened yesterday and is located beside the baseball diamond at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.
It’s an inexpensive sport to play, requiring only a pair of running shoes and a disc or frisbee.
“It gives the opportunity for anyone, regardless of skill level or athletic ability something new to try,” said Curt McQueen, chair of the Healthy Communities Advisory Committee. “It doesn’t cost much at all. And I think it’s something that can bring people together and the more we can have that in our community, the better we are for it.”
The cost to set up the course was approximately $10,000, relatively inexpensive compared to other sports as noted by staff.
“It’s fairly simple, there’s nine baskets so nine holes,” explained Mayor Shawn Watters. “We have wooden tee deck…and some signage so there’s very minimal cost to set something like this up.”
You can access a map of the course and a score card on your phone by using the UDisc app.
