CENTRE WELLINGTON – Downtown Fergus will be a bit brighter thanks to some grant funding.
Centre Wellington Township was awarded over $88,000 in funds through the My Main Street program. My Main Street is a $15-million program from the Government of Canada through FedDev Ontario in an attempt to spur local economic recovery.
As part of the application, many initiatives were considered and approved, but because of timing, staff said many desired projects are now not possible and instead the focus will be on three key initiatives. Those initiatives were approved by council during a meeting earlier this week and include the installation of downtown lighting project, increasing the number of Twilight in Templin concerts and enhancing night markets such a Sip and Shop and Witches Night Out or other BIA functions.
According to Kristen Bettiol, Manager of Community Development, the majority of funds will focus on “uplighting” buildings.
In addition to the grant funding, staff said a second funder is interested in supporting up to $30,000 in the labour or design work for the lighting project. Bettiol said this could mean different things, after being asked by council what that funding was going to be used for.
The project must be complete by December 31 of this year.
