FERGUS – The Township of Centre Wellington and the Wellington Catholic District School Board have agreed to reconsider the sale and acquisition of Strathallan Park in Fergus.
In January, Centre Wellington Council declared the lands surplus to initiate the process of the disposition of Strathallan Park, which would facilitate an expansion of St. Joseph Catholic School.
Since then the township and school board have been working on a plan that would provide mutual benefit to both parties.
In a news release, the township says since the lands were declared surplus in January, the long-term accommodation needs of the Wellington Catholic District School Board have changed.
“To accommodate increasing enrollment the Wellington Catholic DSB will be reassessing the accommodation requirements of the Board. The Township understands that the Wellington Catholic DSB will not be pursuing any rezoning of the property which would have been a necessary precondition of any sale,” the news release said.
As a result, township staff will be taking a report to Council in the near future recommending that the lands be deemed non-surplus.
The Wellington Catholic DSB continues to explore options for other sites to accommodate education and childcare needs within the township.
