WELLINGTON NORTH – Wellington North Council has passed a motion supporting a request to the province and the federal government for a better deal regarding the Land Transfer Tax (LTT) and the GST.
Wellington North is throwing its support behind a motion that is gaining some traction in other municipalities. It will formally ask the province to redistribute the LTT and ask the same of the federal government in regards to the GST.
Council is also asking that funding from the Land Transfer Tax and GST be structured to provide predictable and sustainable funding to municipalities.
Councillor Steve McCabe says the current agreement between the province and the federal government hasn’t been updated in years and it is a broken system.
Councillor Penny Renken supported the idea but asked McCabe if other would be joining in the request with McCabe saying members of the Rural Ontario Municipal Association or ROMA are hoping even more support.
While supporting the idea, Mayor Andy Lennox said he wondered if it would water down similar initiatives including one by the Association of Municipalities (AMO).
The motion was passed during yesterday’s meeting. Staff will now send copies of the resolution to government officials.
