FERGUS – A new UGDSB school begins its search for a name.
Board website and social media channels Tuesday gave the update that with the school set to open in fall 2025, the hunt for a name begins on the back of the community.
A survey is now live where residents can cast their preliminary vote in what Heather Loney, the board’s Communications and Public Relations Manager, says is important preliminary work.
Naming the school after an individual or corporation is not permitted under new regulations in Policy 303 regarding the naming of schools or facilities.
Instead, a variety of other factors, Loney noted, are considered to shape the name.
The board mandates UGDSB’s choice must be distinguishable from surrounding schools and establishments.
Loney says community is key in this process searching for a long-enduring name.
This public consultation in the form of a survey will be followed up by a virtual town hall as the board narrows down the long list created by this resident survey. The final decision will be made by board trustees following a detailed report and recommendation.
Loney explained next steps will include an opportunity for families to get acclimated with the new school.
She went on to detail construction has advanced greatly since the fall. Even at that point, walls were up, grading was underway.
All signs point towards the school opening its doors in September 2025. “Stay tuned,” Loney added.
“It’s a pretty exciting time.”
