GUELPH – An Oakville man has been arrested following a Guelph bank robbery earlier this week; one of 14 he is alleged to have committed in several jurisdictions.
Just after 4 p.m. Monday, police were called to a bank near Stone Road West and Scottsdale Drive. Staff reported a male had approached a teller and demanded cash after removing a large knife from a reusable shopping bag. He fled after being given a small amount of cash. No employees or customers in the bank at the time were physically injured.
It is believed the same suspect robbed 14 banks and two retail businesses between February 8 and February 25. The other robberies were in Toronto, Hamilton, Peel, Halton and Niagara regions.
Guelph Police Service officers worked with their colleagues in other jurisdictions to identify a suspect, who was arrested Wednesday by the Toronto Police Service. A quantity of cash was recovered during the arrest.
A 52-year-old Oakville man is charged with several counts each of robbery with a weapon and wearing a disguise with intent to commit an offence. He was held for a bail hearing.
Investigations are ongoing in a number of jurisdictions.
