MAPLETON – Following resident consultation at a local wind farm, citizens vouch turbines are detrimental on the whole. Mapleton stood pat at a recent council meeting, reiterating their stance against additional turbines in the township.
According to a report, residents who live within two kilometres of the Conestogo Wind Energy Project were surveyed after a new wind development came before council in Mapleton last fall.
70 per cent of those surveyed reported an overall negative experience, for a range of reasons. Martin Tamlyn, township Climate Change Coordinator, who presented the report says a variety of factors led to the negative feedback.
55 per cent said they heard noise from the turbines often, and 75 per cent reported a visual impact to their surroundings.
Councillor Marlene Ottens was satisfied with the survey before council, as she explained the issue has carried a lot of weight in Mapleton.
Councillor Michael Martin said he was pleased with the decision to leave Mapleton’s quality farmland alone.
39 properties were surveyed as a part of the study put on by Tamlyn.
In the end, Mapleton council voted to “remain an unwilling host” for wind turbine projects. Find the full report here.
