WELLINGTON COUNTY – A shift in the structure of the blue box system is en-route to Wellington County July 1st.
The new system won’t have too many noticeable changes for residents, says Das Soligo, the county’s Manager of Solid Waste Services. Soligo did note, however, there is a change in the way the costing will break down at county level.
The shift will see several initiatives from the province of Ontario, as they hope to incentivize municipalities towards greener initiatives.
For now, several models are being rolled out by county council to mitigate the effects of this new structure on local businesses, who aren’t included in this structure, as producers will not be required to pay for their blue bin services.
Soligo detailed the response from council that will bridge that gap.
Soligo explained the County has been sending staff to these businesses to explain their options, but those who may have been missed can access the county website for more information, or call the county with any questions they may have.
An element of fairness highlights the new provincially mandated recycling structure, Soligo said. He went on to explain the aforementioned element of equity for residents stems from where the costs for recycling services will now originate.
A few minor changes will be present for residents, says Soligo, the first of which is that they will need to reach out for any questions pertaining to collection to a different line.
Soligo says more significant changes could be coming in January of 2026. He explained he expects to see a standardization of what goes in the blue box province wide, so it will match from municipality to municipality.
