ELORA – As Elora’s Junior B Lacrosse club gears up for another season, the team will be sporting a new team name and logo.
In a statement posted to social media Thursday, the club says, “This year we are starting the season with the same grit and determination our supporters have come to count on and a new team name. Countless hours and conversations have gone into the decision to change the name of the team and the Executive have chosen together, to re-name the team as the *Elora Hawks*.”
For many years, the team was known as the Elora Mohawks.
“The Elora Mohawks Junior B Lacrosse Club started in 1964 in Guelph and moved to Elora in 1967. Since then, the teams have shared victories and defeats, winning six Founder’s Cup and countless other memories.”
In 2019, the Ontario Human Rights Commission identified the Elora Mohawks as a non-indigenous sports organization using indigenous themes and logos.
With the change, the Elora Hawks say it reflects the club’s ongoing commitment to growth, inclusivity, and respect while honouring the strong lacrosse tradition in our town.
