FERGUS – A new elementary school being built in Fergus is closer to getting a name.
The school being constructed at Kirvan Street and Elliot Avenue East within the Fergus Storybrook subdivision will see the 328-pupil junior kindergarten to Grade 8 school open for the 2025/2026 school year.
After gathering over 260 name suggestions from more than 530 community members, the school naming committee has recommended “Grand River Public School.”
The school naming committee narrowed it down to five names.
- Grand River
- Limestone Ridge
- Little Falls
- Riverbend
- Storybrook
A virtual town hall that was hosted had attendees rank the names, with Grand River being the most popular name.
According to a report presented to the committee, the name pays homage to the river flowing through Fergus, highlighting its historical importance and Indigenous heritage ties.
Following new regulations, the naming of schools in the board is now no longer named after an individual or corporation.
The Grand River proposed name gained approval from the Upper Grand District School Board’s finance committee and is now awaiting final board endorsement.
