FERGUS – On Thursday, May, 22nd, a pair of online, mental heath-focused workshops, will be offered by a local community services group.
Marking Mental Health Awareness Month, Compass Community Services say they want to “encourage every day conversations about mental health and wellbeing.”
The afternoon workshop, starting at noon, will be a lunchtime session for professionals: How to be Well at Work. The second session, which will kick off at 7 p.m, aims to provide help with everyday stressors. Both will be held online via Zoom.
Sarah Sytsma, Compass’ Director of Mental Health Services, says waitlists persist widespread across not only the community, but country-wide.
Sytsma says she hopes these workshops can help normalize the fact that mental wellbeing is something we all need to take care of.
While organizers know these workshops are only part of the solution, Erica Pellin, Compass Executive Director, says there’s a sense of helping those in need in the community.
CamH reports in any given year 1 in 5 Canadians will experience a mental illness. By age 40 one in two have or have had a mental illness. Faced with those numbers, Pellin says she is taken aback, and recognizes how key it is to pay attention to your mental health.
Helping people learn to use several different practical tools, like being able to reflect on what balance looks like to you, will be an important part of the workshops, says Sytsma.
Hoping to offer “the start of a wellbeing journey,” the web workshops are open to all 18 and above.
Compass offers a variety of mental health services in the community. For more on their efforts, head to their website, here. You can also find their list of mental health clinics in the community.
