GUELPH – The 2024 Police-reported crime statistics in Canada have been released by Statistics Canada and this data confirms that Guelph continues to be a safe community for our citizens.
In 2024 the Guelph Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) had the sixth lowest overall Crime Severity Index amongst CMAs in Canada. This is an improvement from our ranking of 8th in 2023 and a dramatic improvement from our ranking of 19th in 2018.
The Crime Severity Index evaluates both the number and relative severity of police-reported crimes. In 2024 our Overall CSI remained virtually unchanged and remains well below both the provincial and national Overall CSIs. Our non-Violent CSI decreased by 8.5 percent compared to a provincial decrease of 3.3 percent and a national decrease of 5.7 percent. Our Violent CSI increased by 18 percent relative to a 2 percent increase provincially and a 1 percent decrease nationally.
“The favourable trend in relation to our overall CSI ranking is a testament to the hard work of our members and citizens. We thank our community, the Guelph Police Service Board and our Guelph City Council for their ongoing support as we work to make Guelph the healthiest and safest community possible,” said Chief Gord Cobey.
“While it is important to acknowledge the progress made, it is critical we remain focused on the work still to be done. Working together with our community, we will continue to focus our efforts, and make the investments required, to ensure we are addressing important issues impacting our residents,” added Chief Cobey. “This includes the continuation of our ongoing work to address incidents of Human Trafficking, Intimate Partner Violence, and Internet Child Exploitation in our city. Together we must work to prevent these crimes, support victims and survivors, and hold offenders accountable.”
