Wellington County’s speed cameras are catching thousands of drivers—but most of them aren’t locals. A new report shows that 72% of Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) tickets went to drivers who live outside the County. Since the program launched, more than 200,000 penalty orders have been issued.
Most violations occur during the day, but evening infractions have more than doubled since earlier this year. Despite some public concerns, County staff say there’s little evidence that drivers are diverting through residential streets to avoid cameras.
Traffic patterns are being monitored, especially near schools and in areas like Drayton and Centre Wellington. Officials say while traffic volumes have shifted slightly on some roads, speed reduction appears to be working—especially in zones with commercial traffic.
All seven ASE locations are now active, including new sites in Hillsburgh and Rockwood. Revenue from the program will be reported later this year.
